ATLANTIC RAINFOREST BIRDS
Any date, best from May to October
Are you on a work trip to São Paulo and/or can’t join a longer tour to other parts of the country? A good option is to visit the Atlantic Rainforest just 2 hours from the city!
The Atlantic Rainforest is one of the richest biodiversity hotspots in the world, with hundreds of endemic birds and other animals. In the past it was heavily destroyed but now what is left is quite well protected by both state and privately-owned reserves, and the largest and most well preserved tracts of forest left – literally thousands of hectares – are just south of the city of São Paulo. This forest is large enough for the presence of top predators like Harpy Eagle and even Jaguars! Of course seeying any of those is extremelly rare here, but I guarantee lots and lots of very colorful and special birds.
The main lodge we use in the area is totally commited to photographers and birdwatchers. During the austral winter its feeders gets absolutely packed with dozens of tame species, like Spot-billed Toucanet, Saffron Aracari, Red-breasted Toucan, Yellow-fronted and Blond-crested Woodpeckers, Green-headed, Red-necked and Magpie Tanagers, Black-throated Grosbeak and many more. Special feeders located in the forest with hides allow us the opportunity to photograph more elusive species as well, like Brown Tinamou and Spot-winged Wood-Quail.
A few mammals are around too, like a tame Tayra that often comes to the feeder and some Pacas that arrive at night. Capuchin and Howler Monkeys may be seen as well and with some luck even a Tapir!
Many other bird species can be found on the trails or just around the lodge, like the endangered Black-fronted Piping-Guan, Red-ruffed Fruitcrow, Channel-billed Toucan, Least Pygmy-Owl, Golden-winged Cacique, Rufous-capped Motmot, Variegated Antpitta, Blue Manakin and many, many more. This is not just a photographers paradise but also a birdwatcher’s paradise. I’ve been guiding birders for over 11 years in the Atlantic Rainforest and can find rare and elusive species for even the most demanding birdwatchers.
